Fixing the Criminal Justice System; Topics for Debate

Author: Lance Winslow

The criminal justice system in the United States needs fixing there is no doubt about it, but the system is so huge and so many interconnected problems where does one start? Well an online think tank has recently taken up this subject actually and a few of the members have identified areas, which could be worked on first.

One online think tank member stated; "Additionally, laws need to be reformed in many areas. This is an entire discussion in and of its self and is too big for this little missive. Suffice to say that there is a LOT of work to be done in this area."

Indeed; Red magic marker committees in every sector of law. But the lawyers will fight it, you would be disrupting their income and extortion fees and they will get downright hostile. The lawyers and lobbyists after all are generally on the committees, which come up with the laws in the first place? The think tank member agreed and further stated;

"Then the criminal justice system needs reforming - it is set up as an adversarial system that was intended to be weighted towards the defendant, but has shifted to favor the prosecution in all cases."

Oh you mean that little bit about; "you are assumed innocent until proven guilty?" part? Yah well, indeed good point; I think from what I have heard I agree with your summation about the public defenders.

I tend to disagree that a poor person who commits a crime is justified especially in justification of violent acts such as the example of the "Crime and Punishment" scenario. Integrity should be the same for all classes of citizens. Although under certain circumstances we should take the stealing for food issues into consideration.

Perhaps you have considered issues, which are wrong with the criminal justice system and have potentially good ideas to straightening things out? If so they would surely be of interest indeed. Consider all this in 2006.
